Transition

So...it's been a little over a year since I last posted here and guess what? We are now actually living in Los Gatos! Who knew? Just two weeks ago we packed our bags, drove nearly 600 miles south and moved in our new place here in the Silicon Valley. It was not all that plain & simple though. There were soooo much that happened first . It was stressful, it was exhausting, it was frustrating at times but we did managed to find and get most of what's on our priority list such as location , school, proximity, price & safety. We found a cute little apartment in a quiet neighborhood and close to excellent schools. It's also very close to work and . So far, I'm liking it but I can't help but think about our beautiful house in Portland Oregon.
Transition is never easy but I feel like it is an exciting time. I know there are many great opportunity that San Jose has to offer and I feel very positive that we will have an awesome life in the southern San Francisco Bay area.

2009 Is Almost Over

And I can't wait for 2010 to start!
This year has been great but there were also a lot of major problem that popped out of nowhere. We've been terribly sick, car trouble, the typhoon Ondoy that almost gave me a nervous breakdown because I couldn't contact my family in the Philippines , and oh , there where many more.
There were also a lot of good stuff and I think I have mentioned it in my previous blog so I'm not gonna reharsh them.

January 2010...I become a student!
Yey, and I am sooooo excited I can't contain it!
My first class is Algebra and as I recall in high school I was pretty good at this. Physics was my worst or probably because the teacher talked so quitely, I could't hear most of her lectures ( excuses lols).
I'm also trying to get English Comp121 but most classes are full and I ams till on the waiting list. My decision to enroll in college came last minute and so most classes that I could take are full :(.
I'll make sure I'll sign up early in the Spring.
For sure I'm gonna be more active with my blog because Ill have plenty to write about and it's a great way to practice my writing skill.
I want "A's" for my grades !

Kids did great this Christmas. I think they got most of the stuff they wanted.Princess is still waiting for her Nintendo DS games. We are waiting for the store's 50% deal..lols..

My US Citizenship Time Line

In March I sent in my application for naturalization including required documents. About 3 months later I received a packet from USCIS with my schedule for the Biometrics .

July was when I went in for finger printing which as I understand is for the USCIS background checking procedure making sure I have a clean record. I went home with a book to study for the test. About a month later a letter came which has my schedule appointment for my citizenship interview and check list for what documents to bring. I was more concern about the paper works and I wanted to make sure I had everything ready to go..original & copies of birth certificates, marriage certificate, tax records etch etch. I didn't really study till the last couple of weeks before my interview because I felt like I already knew half of the questions in the US civic test & history.

October 19 at 11am was my appointment. I had all my papers in neat order with cute little colored sticky tabs so I know exactly which folder to reach. We got there at about 10:30 . The classic maybe 1950-60 building in Broadway was were the federal office is. Every applicant or visitor would have to go through airport-like security before you could go in. I even had to take my shoes off because the metal detector kept going off. There's this box attached to the wall next to the door to the waiting area where the official letter of appointment were deposited. While I waited for my name to be called I put on my earphones and started listening to the questionaires that Grant uploaded to my Blackberry. I was writing down the answers to my pad because it seems much easier for me to remember stuff if I also have the memory in my hand as I write down every words.

One by one each applicants were called. Some of the applicant who already had been interviewed came back to the waiting room to meet family members and none of them seems to have the looks as if they just heard a really really bad news. It's quite the opposite. Everyone that I saw seems to have a great smile on their faces and helped calm my nerves.

At exactly 11 o clock there were only 2 of us left sitting at the waiting room when a lady officer called a name which was not mine.. This young asian girl , perhaps a Vietnamese, stood up and glanced at me as she walked out the door. Suddenly I felt odd being alone in the room. I started getting anxious and worried that perhaps they've forgotten there's one more applicant left :(. At about 11:30 I peeked outside to the hall way at asked a lady officer who happened to pass by if there's still interviewing people and I pointed out that I was scheduled 30 mins ago.
She said not to worry and assured me that I will be called soon.
11:50 was when the officer finally called my name. We walked to hall way to an unassuming room and she asked me to raise my right hand & swear to tell the truth. She was going with her question quite fast and I kept telling myself to listen carefully, make direct eye contact and answer clearly and always address the officer politely and end my answers with " Yes Ma’am" or "No Ma’am". She asked questions such as " Have you ever been convicted of a crime " and I answered " No Ma’am". There were perhaps 15 similar questions like that then she made me read a sentence a loud and asked me to write down the answer on the other sheet of paper. She then opened a book and gave me 6 questions about civic like " Name one of the longest river in the US?" and " When was the Constitution got drafted?" I answered all questions correctly. She checked some more of the files she have in front of her and told me that I passed the interview and that I could be sworn in the next day if I want to. I said yes I would like to be sworn in tomorrow. :) She congratulated me and I was gonna shake her hand but she declined because she just sneezed and she didn't want to spread her germs on me :)
I walked out of her office back to the hall way where Grant & Shinjo were waiting. I was so glad that I passed and even though I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to impress the officer on how I prepared my docs because she didn't ask for any of it. All she asked were my greencard, passport and my drivers license. I'm thinking maybe she already have more than enough papers about me because that folder of my file that she had on her desk was over an inch thick.

Grant gave me a hug and although he didn't say much I know he was happy and proud of me.

The Oath Taking & Swearing In Ceremony.

Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at 1:50PM was when I was gonna be an official naturalized citizen of the United States Of America. My mother in law came with us and I was more than happy that she was there to witness this event in my life ( just like when I gave birth to Shinjo , she was there too). Grant met us at the federal building .Shinjo was there too but Princess had school so she wasn't able to come.
When we arrived at about 1:40 the room was almost full with applicants and their family. There were different nationalities in that one room that it felt so symbolic and even more inspiring to be a part of this great nation.
At exactly 1:50pm a lady officer announced that everybody transfers to the 2nd floor where we were given further instruction on how the ceremony is gonna be conducted. Family members were called in first to the room and let them take their seats. Meanwhile, us applicant were called one by one by another officer and asked for our letter of appointment and our greencard. I didn't know that that was the last time I'm gonna see my greencard because it was not returned to us. To the room there were pamphlets and brochures waiting on our tables and there was a big projector screen on the front wall. The officer welcomed us all and played a short clip about the many faces of naturalized citizens from the old days to the present. The next thing I know, the front row where all the applicants were seated are standing up with our right hands raised reciting the oath of allegiance, then we Pledge of Allegiance and then very quickly we were handed one by one our official certificate of citizenship.
The thoughts that were running through my head was the memories of me & Grant when we started the immigration process, the many tears and anxieties, sleepless nights not knowing what's gonna happen next, Grant's numerous trip to the Philippines to visit me and the heartaches every time we say goodbyes at the airport full of uncertainties and longing for each other. I am so glad he didn't give up on me and I am even more thankful that I we found each other 7 years ago.

Up next..US passport...

The Week Before My Big Day

Has it been that long??
August was my 5th anniversary of coming to America, land of the free and the home of the brave. Lots & lots of things had happened of course and our kids are almost as big as me which is not really a far reach since I am vertically challenged. I think I've learned so much in life this past 5 years more than my first 20+ of existance. Anyhoo...on Monday, Oct 19 at 11am , I will be interviewed by a Homeland Security & Immigration officer, test my knowledge on basic American civic & history and if I pass I will be officially a U.S. citizen!!

Last Minute Scare.
So last Wednesday evening I was checking my folder of paperwork to make sure I got everything ready to go when I glanced upon one line in the immigration checklist of docs to bring to my interview. My heart starts to pulpitate because I just realized I didn't have the kind of IRS forms  that the USCIS specifically requires . I really thought that it's just our tax record that they needed which I was confident that we have but it when I look closely, it was another form that was called IRS 1722 Letter. It's like a transcript of our past tax records. Ofcourse I googled immidiately and the more I read the more my panic attack worsen because every website says it will take 10-15 days after you submit a request to the IRS.

Oh my freakin lord!!! I don't have no god dammed 10-15 days. I got till Monday!!! Crying like a four year old feeling doomed and silently cursing myself for  making this huge mistake , I fell asleep in tears. But the next morning I called the IRS first thing .
Ring ring ring...( generic automated answering machine...)...thank you for calling the IRS...says the recorded voice on the other line...pres 1 if you need to ..blah blah blah....pres 2 if you yadidah didah.....then when I reached the option that I wanted the voice says..."there are other callers ahead of you so please don't hang up".....and I was like " No shit!"...your estimated wait time is....fifteen minutes. Seems like the longest fifteen minutes ever but I didn't mind at all in fact I used my wait time to pray to all the saints that I could remember to help me get through a "live Person" and not get transfered again. At about 16 mins later I heard a voice...a live person...a man..named Tony or Benny..I can't remember now but he sounded nice. I tried really hard to calmly explain to him my predicament ( or how stupid I was) and I guess he sensed from my obvious begging tone he asked my routine questions to established if this was a legit call and then he said the word that I was Praying to hear ...do you want me to mail it or FAX it to you??? I was secretly dancing and screaming inside my head ( yes yes yes!!!). He was so nice that he faxed 24 pages of freakin' tax infos which was exactly what I need for my interview.
Whew!! I was so happy and relieved I was smiling from ear to ear!!!

I just need to have passport pics taken and I'll do that tomorrow and I'm definitely 100% ready. I was told that if I was interviewed & tested ( and passed ) in the morning I might get sworn in the same day. Wooh!! I am so excited I can't stand it!!

Sample Picture Of Certification Of Naturalization
I'm gonna be getting this very cool piece of paper !! Yeah!!

Fitness Update:
Still working out regularly but today I decided it is time to amp it up. I know I look better than I was 3 months ago but I wanted to lose more body fat before xmas so I increased resistance on my cardio, lifted more weight and work out more muscles and added more abs work out. My diet hasn't been squeeky clean but not too bad..still I need to get tougher & stricter if I want to lose more inches on my waist line.
We'll see if I can follow through!!

Busy Week

As much as I want to update my blog everyday I realized that
my schedule is too tight and sometimes crazy so I decided I'd update my blog every weekend and I will talk about stuff that happened to me that week, movies I watched or anything else that I would want to remember later on.

Monday is the usual crazy day but I think I managed my time pretty well.
I was mad at Grant coz he didn't eat his lunch that I made for him and I told him I wont make lunch for him anymore :( . It was also Shinjo's first meeting with PSU's speech clinician Sarah. It felt weird driving through downtown PDX again after a couple of month off. The roads were different because there was a dedicated lane for bikers and also more road side parking for cars. We met Sarah at 1pm and I think Shinjo likes her .

Tuesday,Wednesday & Thursday were about the same . Grant had his friend Ian visit but it was late at night so I just stayed in our room and let the two of them hang out & play video games till past midnight.

Friday morning, kids have no school so we stayed in bed till almost 9am. I made the kids french toasts & I boiled water so I could make myself a hot cup of coffee which was decaf coz since I quit drinking caffein a months ago I didn't have coffee beans in the fridge like I used to.

My usual weekend morning routine is sit in front of the computer , check the headlines in the news while drinking my cup of joe..only this time it's decaf. I didn't feel like drinking tea , maybe I wanted the smell of coffee...anyway...I was surprised to see the big headline for Friday morning , President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize!!! I was like...don't they award that to older people?? Ofcourse it was a huge news and it's amuzing to read people's reaction about esp. the republicans. Thank god there is the Rachel Maddow Show to give a better perspective on why the Nobel commitee decided that Obama should be given the award. I was so proud of Pres. Obama and you'd think tje entire nation felt the same way but any are just filled with hatred that it seems they live & breath just hating Pres. Obama no matter what he do. Here is one of my favorite comment from many of the readers ( there were like 30thousand plus comments about Obama winning the Nobel just in that  linked website alone) :
As I said below, for conservatives, "peace" means the silence of the battle field, which occurs only after you have "won" and your enemies lie silent at your feet.
For them, peace will only come after S@T@n has been defeated and Chr1st, victorious, stands astride a world which worships at his feet.
For progressives, peace is the absence of war. Any steps taken to deter the loss of life and create concord between peoples is an act of peace.
The prize was awarded "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"; A progressive holding of the meaning of "peace" if ever there ever was one. Definitely not the peace of the right wing Dominionists. Hence the disconnect.
As the other article, pointing out Cheney's silence in the face of Obama's anti-terrorism victories, this prize, too, points out the efficacy of words and brains over sheer might and bombast.
The adults are back in charge and the adolescents don't like it one little bit.
I admit I am a news junkie or a politic junkie and I consider myself as a progressive so expect to see many more topics about politics in this blog esp important event like this which was a really big deal.

Saturday , I was sooo lazy!!! Grant had to go to work to finish a project and mom was sick upstairs so I didn't feel like doing anything at all.
I was wearing my froggy pajamas till 2pm lols...
But by 2:30 Grant called & he said he's on his way home with Matt and that I could go to the gym. I was literally dragging my feet. First of all, just got tired of the gym closest to our house. The parking is awful and people looks so boring. I've gotten used to the gym at T.V. highway in Hillsboro that I go to after I drop Shinjo off to school. Anyhoo...I still manged to do 4 miles of cardio, some upper body weight training and my regular abs work out routine.
I planned of stricting my diet even more starting next week. I think I'm gonna make a big batch of soup and that's all I'm gonna eat and I'll try to avoid carbs. Lets see if that'll work to lose weight.

Ok that it for now.
I hope there's more interesting stuff to write for next week ")

Tropical Storm Ketsana ( Ondoy) Hit Manila

I am posting this story so I will always remember what devastation this
storm brought to my country. Although I was glad my parents and family are all okay , I was very saddened that many weren't so lucky.
Our house was under water too and damaged all appliances and furnitures. There were no dry clothing left and matresses ,pillows & cushions had to be thrown away coz they were soaked in rain water.

Mother Nature is giving us signs. We need to wake up and start doing something for our environment , for our planet...or else it's just gonna get worst & worst & pretty soon we will be left with nothing.
